The subject of the thesis was the services supporting fatherhood provided by the Lempäälä family center services and networks, as well as the practices of working with fathers. The purpose of the study was to examine the user-oriented model of supporting fatherhood in Lempäälä. The thesis was commissioned by Lempäälä family center services. It was a research-based development study, the purpose of which was to model the current processes and future target processes related to working with fathers in Lempäälä. The goal was to assess and develop the services in a user-oriented way and from the perspective of supporting fatherhood. The goal was also to turn the Lempäälä way of working with fathers into a model that could be replicated and used as a basis for the development of new services in other environments, for example, to support the development of regional family center networks in the wellbeing services county. The high-quality modelling of service processes of preventive work with fathers in Lempäälä required the use of method triangulation. Participant observation, action research and thematic interviews of employees were selected as research methods. The material was analysed by thematizing and typification. The theoretical base for the thesis was to be broad, as the purpose was to try to reason the justification and necessity of working with fathers. The theory section consisted of a historical overview of men’s and fatherhood studies; the intergenerational nature of attachment relationship and parenting model; emancipation as the initiator of change; the trends and public discussion about fatherhood; and the development of working with fathers. The results of the thesis show that fathers in Lempäälä are supported by services especially targeted at fathers and father-focused content in family services; by an approach that takes fathers into account in services, as well as advocacy within the organisation and in networks. According to the experiences of fathers and employees, there are several current processes that are relevant from the point of view of supporting fatherhood. The development needs that emerged from the data, i.e. the target processes, are mainly related to the development of the contents of the current processes and the improvement of quality from the fathers’ perspective. There is no need for completely new services, but the need for new processes related to the promotion of an approach that takes fathers into account is obvious. As the purposes of working with fathers, striving for comprehensive well-being of families and emancipation are highlighted. The Lempäälä model opens up the processes of working with fathers and structures them into a form that can be more easily assessed, developed and replicated.
