This podcast takes us into the complexities of environmental struggles where local perspectives and global visions of what it means to be sustainable clash. In this podcast we interview Nina Långstedt and Esa Nykänen who are founding members of the association "Livskraft I Nyland utan Stålverk rf - Elinvoimainen Uusimaa ilman terästehdasta ry" (in English, "Lifeforce for Uusimaa without a Steel Plant"). Nina is an organic farmer and Esa Nykänen is a researcher. Both of them joined this association to opposed the Blastr ”green" steel plant, which has been proposed to be built in their home community Ingå/Inkoo. Nina's and Esa's views represent different viewpoints of those who fear the impacts that the proposed steel plant in the community. Esa draws on scientific knowledge while Nina speaks of how this can impact the future of food production. These are reasons why they felt a need to join forces and form a movement that defends the local environment against polluting activities labelled as "green." The discussion in this podcast serves as a reminder that one should not always believe in what is presented as green and sustainable. It is always also important to critically examine the facts and pay attention what is not widely reported in media.
You can follow the association in Inkoo on this Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1071613187353956/ This podcast was produced as a final group assignment in the course Sustainable Organising in Times of Crises at Hanken School of Economics in the spring of 2024.
