Etätyö maaseudulla kakkosasunnolla. Töissä lomalla luonnon helmassa

The purpose of this study is to enquire into why people do telework at their second houses in the countryside and how work combines with life at the summer cottage. In addition, the environmental attitudes of teleworkers and the meanings they attribute to environmental issues in their summer cottages were studied. The teleworkers' life style and the meanings they attributed to physical places and work were studied from two viewpoints: that of individual well-being and that of life at second homes in the Finnish society, where industrial society's spatial and temporal structures are present alongside with the inventions of information technology. Telework is defined as work that is done remotely in other places than the normal workplace. Cottage telework is telework that is done at the summer cottage or second house. The culture of summer cottages is approached from the point of view of paid work. The theoretical framework is multidisciplinary, combining work and life-style research with sociological environmental research. The main data consists of thematic interviews, which were committed in the autumn of 2004 with twelve 39- to 59-year old white collar workers. The interviewees were all working part-time at their second houses. The computer programme ATLAS.ti, which is an analytical utility, was used for data analysis. The data analysis used in this study is qualitative and based on the principle of coding. First, the data was read from the point of view of facts, and as the analysis progressed, the meanings that the subjects gave to matters were studied. According to this study, teleworking at the summer cottage benefits well-being. The most notable benefits of telework at second houses compared to traditional work are improved quality of life, more peaceful working conditions and better work efficiency as well as the relationship with the environment and benefits related to housing. For the research objects, the second house is the best place, a favorite spot which helps them cope in their work life. Few disadvantages of telework at the second house were mentioned. The disadvantages were mainly connected with overtime work, communications and ICT, work efficiency, economical costs and distance to the second house. Taking work to places traditional holiday spots implies a creative attitude towards work. In summer cottage telework, work life, domestic life and leisure time are to some extent concurrent and intertwined. Summer cottage teleworkers are divided into two groups based on their work ethics. For one group, telework is a means of improving work efficiency. The other group sees telework at a second house as part of their life-style. Only few of the teleworkers sought a more ecological life style than in the city at their summer cottages, but many were cultivating the land and were consuming less than in the city. The most appreciated things about life in the second homes were that it is close to nature and peaceful. Life at the summer cottage is more centered around nature than life in the city, both regarding work rhythm and hobbies. Telework at summer cottages is connected to a dual morphology of life style; life is divided between the city and the countryside. Life at the second house is about stability and traditional life style, in some cases even retiring from the world. On the other hand, telework at the summer cottage facilitates a flexible life rooted in many places, and the teleworker himself can divide his life between country and city. Telework at the second home both maintains, renews and breaks with the culture of summer cottages. Many traditions are associated with cottage life, but telework makes the cottage something more than a "museum" and renews it for example as communications are improved.
