The purpose of the thesis was to recycle cutting waste from upholstery to home decor products and develop methods to recycle the unused part of cutting waste and other surplus. The project got started when the author of the thesis was doing a work placement in the company Verhoiluverstas. The author of the thesis noticed during the work placement that there are increasing amounts of cutting waste and other materials that could be put to better use. One of the aims of the thesis was to find out if some of the other surplus materials from upholstery could also be used in the products.

For the background information the thesis examines latest textile recycling and textile waste publications. One of the basis of the thesis was that in year 2016 comes into effect a new act of waste legislation that outlaws dumping biodegradable waste and textiles to landfills. The thesis introduces the main points of the legislation. For information how upholstery entrepreneurs recycle or use their cutting waste and other surplus, upholsterers were interviewed.

The results of the thesis include a compact information summary of textile recycling in year 2016, first prototypes of the products made from cutting waste, patterns of the products and a few ideas of recycling textile waste. Results of developing methods to recycle unused textile waste and surplus remain slightly unfinished, so as the product development. The improvement ideas of recycling other surplus and textile waste are things that should be considered in the future.
