"Miten sinne pääsee?" : Asiakasnäkökulma saavutettavuusviestintään Hämeenlinnan alueen kulttuurikohteissa

Accessibility promotion is a new term in the field of social work. It quite simply means the information what a cultural institution or a culture service provider gives out to the customers about their accessibility. Proper accessibility promotion is an important step on the way towards an inclusive society and therefore it is important to bring the subject out for conversation. The commissioner of the thesis is the Disability council of Hämeenlinna.

The goal of this thesis is to find out the current situation of accessibility promotion of cultural services in the region of Hämeenlinna, to study what is the meaning of accessibility promotion for a person with different disabilities and shed light to the personal experiences of disabled people regarding accessibility.

The theoretical ground for this thesis lies within Finnish legislation and different declarations of the rights of disabled people in European Union and UN. In addition theoretical material has been searched regarding social points of view in accessibility and for example the meaning of culture and recreational activities in wellbeing.

The thesis was executed in accordance to principles of qualitative study and the material was collected with thematic interviews. The results were analyzed using thematizing and categorization. Three adults with physical disabilities were interviewed for the material.

The main finds of the study are, 1) the challenges that are presented to a dis-abled person because of neglected accessibility promotion, 2) the importance of sufficient accessibility promotion and 3) the individuality and different needs of disabled people according to accessibility. The thesis also presents some ideas how the subject could be studied or handled in the future by stu-dents or other people interested of the matter.
