Purpose of this thesis was to examine the possibilities of a smartphone as a tool of estimation for a forest to be cut, and to create a method using existing tools that a professional or active forest owner can utilize when estimating the amount of timber. Today’s mobile phones contain relatively large memories and power to calculate for execution of numerous applications and storing data. They also carry a wide range of sensors that can be utilized for measuring purposes.

The basis of the work is formed by the sensor technology inside a modern mobile phone, and the available free applications and the possibilities of using those when measuring forest and timber. Using this available soft-ware, a method is created for measuring and evaluating the forest to be cut so that any other measuring tools, beside a smartphone, are unnecessary. One goal is also to create a flexible tool that can be modified by the user to match better the forests of a certain area. Key features are the free software and independency from companies and organizations.

The method created is documented and instructions are given for using and further developing it. Basic models of timber volume calculation and for timing and intensity of the thinnings are taken from Tapio’s recom-mendations for good forestry with the exception that the models are para-metrized so that they can be modified.

According to the results it is definitely possible to estimate forest and timber with using only a smartphone. On the other hand a smartphone is not, at least currently, an ideal tool for these measurements mainly because of the limitations of the sensors – a thing that is likely to improve in the future by the evolution of smartphones.
