The purpose of this thesis was to create an improvement plan to develop the circumstances of park & ride cycling in the city of Kerava. The thesis was commissioned by the City of Kerava and its public utility of Kaupunkitekniikka. The present stage of park & ride parking at Kerava train station, differences between connection cycling and driving and an inquiry made to the citizens of Kerava were used as background information for the thesis project. The theory part of this thesis deals with the significance of park & ride parking and sizing bicycle parking. Based on the background information and theory, an improvement plan to develop the parking area for park & ride cyclers was made. Three studies were made for this thesis. One to figure out what were the problems in the bicycle parking area according to the citizens of Kerava and two to figure out the present stage and usage of the park & ride parking area. The materials used for this thesis included: raw data from park & ride case study from HSL, geographic information data from HSY, materials from the city of Kerava and several different guidance sheets produced by HSL, Liikennevirasto and Rakennustieto. The outcomes indicated that the biggest problem in connection parking for bicycles is safety. Lots of theft and vandalism take place. Based on this project, the main point in the improvement plan is to develop more secure ways to park a bicycle to the parking place. For the ease of implementing improvement plan, new areas were not designed. The main focus was on improving the parking areas that already exist. The most significant recommendation of this thesis is to renew old bicycle stands with new ones that allow securing the bicycle from the frame to the structure of the stand.
