This Bachelor’s thesis was commissioned by Silta-Valmennusyhdistys Association, which is a non-governmental organization in Tampere. The aim of this thesis was to collect information about how handicraft methods affect young people’s wellbeing and school attendance. The purpose was to acquire information which enables the development of Silta-Niva activities, which are arranged in collaboration between Silta-Valmennus Association and the education services of the city of Tampere. Silta-Niva is aimed at youth attending secondary school. Its purpose is to assist the youth with school attendance and other things in life.

This thesis was a practice-based qualitative research. Twelve handicraft workshops were carried out as a part of the study. The aim of the production was to generate empowering experiences for the youth. The research methods were introductory inquiry, feedback of the handicraft workshops, participant observation and interviews of the youth and their teacher. The theoretical background deals with social pedagogy, dropping out of school and study motivation, empowerment as well as the effects of handicrafts on wellbeing.

Based on the research results it can be concluded that the handicraft workshops influenced the school attendance of the youth and their wellbeing positively. The thesis proves that regular activities, a good team spirit and trust help to generate empowering experiences. On the basis of the thesis it can be stated that it is worth proceeding and developing the handicraft work in Silta-Niva.
