The purpose of this thesis was to examine unsafe ways to schools surrounding primary schools of Salo. The objective of this thesis was to improve traffic safety with different kinds of actions around the environments where younger students found their ways to school unsafe. In addition the purpose of this thesis was to improve common comfort and increase outdoor movability of young students. Commissioner of this thesis was the department of traffic services in the city of Salo.

The theoretical section of this thesis is orientated with features of movability of children and the attitudes of other traffic users. The theoretical section also examined different roles in education of children among traffic environment. There was also examined the Koululiitu –program which works as a guidance when evaluating safeties of roads surrounding primary schools. The affirmations of school transports are based on the principles of transport regulations in the city of Salo which are also surveyed in this thesis.

The research was limited to examine only the primary schools outside the population centers in those areas where unsafe routes were to be found. The features of the roads and their risk factors were examined so that traffic safety improvements were possible to plan. There were also examined possibilities of alternative routes of transports. The research was made with the help of information concerning school transport affirmations and the online material services of Finnish Transport Agency.

With the help of the research several kinds of traffic improving suggestions were made including alternative routes of school transport. In addition a model of cost influences was made concerning the simultaneous school ending times and the effects to transport routes.
