This Bachelor’s thesis was commissioned by Lassila & Tikanoja Oyj, which works as a partnership-company in Suurteollisuuspuisto Industrial Park at Harjavalta. Lassila & Tikanoja Oyj is in charge of the industrial park’s enviromental management. This Bachelor’s thesis was part of the super sack -project, which tries to get Suurteollisuuspuisto Industrial Park’s waste utilization rate to a better level.

The goal of this thesis was to chart the present state of the super sacks containing heavy metals. The super sacks come about in connection with raw material deliveries, at the Suurteollisuuspuisto Industrial Park. Also the aim of this thesis was to find out waste recovery options to the super sacks either clean or dirty.

The theoretical part deals with the production processes and enviromental licenses of Boliden Harjavalta Oy, Norilsk Nickel Harjavalta Oy and Lassila & Tikanoja Oyj, the enviromental impact and the impact of health of the raw material that arrives to the Suurteollisuuspuisto Industrial Park, previous research on the topic, public legislation of waste and systems of industrial symbiosis. The thesis includes laboratory tests from the samples that were taken and testing the sample lot. Essential ideology was to figure out the operation models that are in accordance with tenets of the sustainable development and waste management order of priority.

The results of the research revealed that waste recovery to the recycling of plastic cannot be realized with heavy metal content super sacks. They should be cleaned before the utilization, cleaning should be done by washing to achieve a decent level of purity. Utilization of the dirty super sacks turned out to be possible inside the Suurteollisuuspuisto Industrial Park, for heating and temperature regulation of the Boliden Harjavalta Oy reverberatory furnace process. Super sacks should be crushed and manufactured to briquettes that are homogeneous and equal in size, before using them at the reverberatory furnace process as collateral fuel with oil. Manufacturing the briquettes proved to be possible.
