This thesis is about classification for the maintenance of green areas in the streets of Helsinki. It is commissioned by the city of Helsinki and based on the author’s internship in the maintenance office in the summer of 2009. The aim of the thesis has been to evolve the classification for the maintenance of street green areas and apply that classification in Helsinki.

There is a need for the maintenance classification of street green in Helsinki. This classification is based on the national classification for the maintenance of green areas in general and it should work with same principles.

Eight classes have been chosen for the maintenance of street green. The main classifying process is done by applying the register system of the city of Helsinki, maps, airphotos and plans.

As a result the classification is created and the classifying of streets has begun. In the future, further development of tha classification might be needed.
