The aim of this thesis was to create a quality handbook which would meet the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard. The commissioning company for the project was Janavalo Oy, the producer of many kinds of metallic sheet products. The current quality handbook of Janavalo Oy has expired and become indistinct because of the many modifications made to it. The ISO 9001 standard was updated in the fall of 2015 and hence it was now reasonable to update the quality management system directly to conform with the updated ISO 9001 standard. Commissioner had set out growth aims for the company and the update of the quality management system was one part of this development project. There was space left in the quality handbook for the environmental system which will be added to the quality handbook later.

The concepts of quality that tell render quality and quality management are described in the theory part of this thesis. These terms derive from the standards or the literature in the field. The author also aimed to define the essence of quality, the principles of quality management and the integral requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard in the theory part of the thesis. The operations of the commissioning company that integrally bear on the requirements of the standard were examined by working in the company and by interviewing responsible persons within the company.

The main result of the thesis was quality handbook which is compatible with the quality policy of the company and fits the operations of the company. It is possible to evaluate the functionality of the quality handbook only after the quality management system has been audited.

In addition to the quality handbook some improvement recommendations in agreement with company operations and documents were given. The recommendations were based on the ISO 9001:2015 standard. The recommendations were necessary in order to meet the requirements of the standard and may assist at the certification stage of the quality management system.
