According to this thesis an occurrence of milk fever always is an economic loss in dairy farming. A hypocalcemia section summarizes the various forms of milk fever, their causes, symptoms, treatments and prevention of milk fever.

A comprehensive list of calcium products available in Finland is included, with details of the calcium salts used and -the quantities and dosage instructions. Details of these were requested from manufacturers and / or marketing by e-mails.

The comparison was cone by the quantity of calcium and price per cow for from a single dose of calcium product. The amount of calcium varied between 12 g and 67 g in the different products and prices of 2.90 €-11.95 € per dose.

A survey was made to dairy farmers asking their usage habits and experiences. According to the survey, they are aware and interested in the use of products, and in particular their active ingredients. Very important was the domestic content requirement.

According to the results calcium products given to dairy cows by mouth may have a significant impact on preventing milk fever. The content of the different calcium salts was also very important.
