This thesis was commissioned by Luomu Invest Oy, which is a company focusing on organic farming engaged in the wholesale of meat and meat products. The main objective of the thesis was to investigate the role of organic farming in Japan.

The purpose of the thesis was to act as an initial survey for Luomu Invest Oy when considering starting the possible export of organic chicken to Japan. Luomu Invest Oy has already done some work in entering the markets of Japan’s neighbouring country Korea and Hong Kong.

The research method used in the thesis was qualitative, based on literary and internet sources. In addition, informal interviews following the theme were made.

As the result of this research it can be stated that the Finnish organic products could have a chance to succeed on the Japanese market, as the Finnish organic products are proven to be pure and Finland has a good reputation as a trading partner. As an export barrier is the current lack of country-specific agreements and export licenses between Finland and Japan. In Finland permits of food export are granted by Evira.

As further measures it is recommended that Luomu Invest Oy should regularly inquire Evira about the progress of getting an export permit. After obtaining the export license they should contact the Japanese JETRO and with the help of Finpro participate in Foodex Japan trade fairs.
