Christians are often heard discussing in various contexts about how creativity should play a bigger role in church facilities. Both employees as well as church members are pondering the same problem yet coming up with no sustainable and, above all, functional solution to what it would be in practice. The church would seem to lack activities where the creativity of different individuals is being promoted and comprehensively encouraged.

This thesis is about plotting a new subsidiary function under the new generation divine service Lataamo (‘Chargery’), where creativity is a key attribute, utilizing the service design methods. The function encourages ordinary people into creative self-expression and implementing themselves. The participant is given the opportunity to learn new, interesting skills and techniques in different fields of creativity. The purpose of the thesis is to increase the overall wellbeing of the Christians.

In order to develop the function, mostly service design and creativity were familiarized with. Additionally, the current state of the church and the atmosphere of reform were also examined. Information was gathered diversely taking advantage of both literacy and internet sources as well as the author’s personal relationship network and involvement in church activities. Research materials were collected via participative observation and group interview. The functional part of the thesis included an experimental first implementation of the function, Luovan toiminnan Lataamo (‘Chargery of creative activities’), where the author of this thesis acted as both an instructor and a researcher.

The thesis resulted in a service which can be used in the church facilities. It is a practical and participant-oriented opportunity for the church to offer creative activities in order to increase the comprehensive wellbeing of the Christians.
