There will soon be the implementation of new guidelines creatingdirection in violent and threatening situations for The Pirkanmaa Fire department. The purpose of this thesis was to find out what paramedics feel about violent and threatening situations. The aim of the thesis was to develop the knowledge of paramedics in facing these kind of situations and to report these situations. Results of the thesis could be taken advantage of the existing work.

Implementation of this thesis was twofold. The first part is to analyses violent and threatening situation reports from The Safety Information System (Työturva Monitori). Reports ranged from January 2012 to March 2015. During that period there were 48 reports about violent and threatening situations.

This data from The Safety Information System served as a basis for the theme of the interview where six advanced level paramedics were questionned. Interview data was analyzed by a content-driven data analysis. As a result it can be said that paramedics face violent and threatening situations on a daily basis. They face both physical and verbal violence. Physical violence occurs through scratching, pushing or batting. Threatening with a knife or becoming too close to a paramedic was also experienced as a threat of physical violence. Some of the paramedics felt that raging and berating was violent behavior. Others felt that is only a part of the job.

Based on this thesis there should be more unite training for workers in emergency care in case of violent and threatening situations. Preparedness and attitude should be of a bigger focus. The prevailing attitude and the operational culture should be of most importance in order to increase safety.
