The thesis was implemented as part of a National Institute for Health and Welfare project: Effectiveness to teaching and learning of tobacco weaning on the upper secondary level and in higher education. The mission of Häme University of Applied Sciences was to organize a pilot day when student nurses implemented their designs of tobacco weaning guidance sessions to practical nursing students. Feedback was collected from participants of the day which was analyzed with inductive content analysis. 68 students participated in the pilot day 62 of whom answered the feedback.

The thesis was executed functionally and its purpose was to produce an article and a poster. The objective was to give magazine readers and the attendees of the poster presentation information about new applications and forms of guidance as well as to clarify how they advanced students’ learning.

Smoking exposes people to many health disadvantages and causes billions of expenses to the society every year so weaning from tobacco is important to national health as well as economy. Tobacco laws have been made stricter and a new law came into effect 8.15.2016. Tobacco weaning is the concern of every health sector professional.

It was apparent from student feedback that the students felt that the project improved their professional know-how and affected students’ attitudes towards smoking. It can be said that the objective of the project to increase basic knowledge about tobacco weaning among students was fulfilled. In the future research could possibly be made about the advance-ment of tobacco weaning skills among students who have participated in the similar projects. The level of tobacco weaning skills among health care professionals could also be studied.
