Vaneri sandaalin pohjamateriaalina

The thesis examines the experimentation and observation of the plywood's possibilities as a sole material in women's high heel sandals. Is it possible to manufacture a functional moulded wooden sole for them? This thesis has been done in co-operation with Kraa Kraa Eyewear. It is a company who designs and manufactures wooden frames for eye- and sunglasses. The company's working methods with the eyeglasses are applied to make footwear soles. The readers are guided to understand demands for the sandal sole and the thesis explains the structure of already existing wooden soles so the readers come to understand what the author wants to aspire in her thesis.

The theory is based on literature, electronic documents, and interviews of professional shoemakers and the author’s own documentations of the experiment. Professionals with whom the author have discussed are Matti Hänninen from Kraa Kraa Eyewear, clothing designer and wooden footwear designer Marita Huurinainen, lecturer Merianne Nebo and master shoemaker Otso Mäensivu.

Because the subject of this thesis is a new design for footwear sole prototype and a product development process, the results do not provide an end product. The end result for the thesis is which kind of method can be used to bend plywood for a moulded sole material. The end results also show that it is possible to use plywood for high heel sandal collection.
