The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis was to explore prisoners’ experiences about the ‘Let’s talk about children’ method. The method is used in family work in Vanaja prison and its purpose is to support parenthood. The aim of the method is to help children and parents to cope with their lives despite parental imprisonment, to help parents support their children at home and outside home and to help families reach services they need. The aim of this thesis was to collect client-oriented information and development ideas about the method.

The theoretical background consists of parenthood in prison, prison family work and imprisonment from a child’s point of view. The aim of the theoretical background was to find out how parenthood is seen in prison, how to support it with family work, and how a child perceives a parent’s imprisonment. The theoretical background also describes more closely the ‘Let’s talk about children’ method. The research problems were: what kind of experiences do prisoners have about the ‘Let’s talk about children’ method, and how has it influenced their lives.

For the qualitative research, the data were collected by an unstructured questionnaire in autumn 2016. The questionnaire was answered by five prisoners who have used the method. The obtained information was analysed using theory-driven content analysis and thematically. The results show that the method is useful and prisoners have very positive experiences of it. The conclusion was that method has only good and preventive influences on parents and children.
