The objective of this thesis was to present fire performance art as a creative and inspirational activity suitable to different groups. Fire performance is a versatile field and there are multiple ways to approach and practice it. The thesis will approach fire performance through laws and regulations, not forgetting safety rules and practices.

The original idea for this thesis was to have an active fire performance group in Hämeenlinna. But rather than having a regular hobby, people who showed interest in it, wished to have separate fire performance workshops, which transformed the idea of this thesis to organizing workshop events. The first event was directed by the author of the thesis herself, the two other events by commissioned fire performers. The events of the workshops were reflected from the perspective of the organizer, director and a participant.

This thesis is a practice-based study, where theoretical knowledge on event organizing, youth activity, social circus and fire performance was applied. The research methods were observation as well as interviews with the fire performers and the people participating in the events. The activities were documented using photographs and videos.

The workshops were guided by TulenTaittajat, a fire performance group from Hämeenlinna, and a group called Free Fenix ry from Helsinki metropolitan area. The participants in the workshops were also given a chance to join the groups in the future. The author is also planning future collaboration with TulenTaittajat. There are preliminary plans for a thematic campaign aimed at youth, which will be realized through fire performance methods.
