The purpose of the thesis was to gather and design a guidebook about stoma- and short bowel syndrome patient's nutrition. The guide is intended for professional use and directed for new nurses and students in gastroenterology departments. The guide contains information about nu-trition after post-operation, and knowledge about what to avoid or prefer as well as practical tips. The guide was made by using new reliable knowledge.

The practice based thesis was created in autumn 2017 in collaboration with gastroenterology department of one university hospital. Writing a nutrition guide was the functional part of the thesis. The theoretical part of the guide handled ostomy and short bowel syndromes, related to nutrition and dietary guidance. The main sources were used in various way. However, new investigated information on the subject was found rather slightly.

The focus of the guide was laid on ostomy and short bowel syndrome within patient's diet right after the surgery. Furthermore, information about the initial phase and nutrition to be used or to avoid was discussed. Finally, relevant information when, for example, identifying bowel obstruction symptoms and how to act in those situations, was involved.
