The research is based on theory found in environmental- and ecopsychological literature about the reviving effect of nature, and the meaning of green area to individual`s healthy growth, development and well-being.

In this research my aim has been to examine what makes a pleasant and reviving environment and how the knowledge from environment- and ecopsychology can be used in practical planning work. I have also clarified the development of individual`s relation to the environment, the effect of ones` favourite place to well-being and placeidentity`s effect on mental health.

The aim of this study is to create an environment that supports the ideology of social and pedagogical equine activities. The social and pedagogical equine activity is a new form of social rehabilitation in Finland, that tries to support ones` social growth and well-being by acting around a stable area. Besides being a functional environment, the green area is assumed to be relevant to the effectiveness of the activities.

In my study I used interactive planning methods to collect the source material. Interactive planning fits very well to the ideology of equine activities, because it emphasises community and functionality. The study leans on the environmental- and ecopsychological frame of reference and into the latest research knowledge available. The theory section is done as a literature review. In the empirical part I have applied the theory and the knowledge from interactive planning when planning the green area in Metsäkylä riding center.

As a result I made a plan the purpose of which was to support the well-being of those moving about the stable area. The goal is to create “a paradise” in the middle of the city. With new planning ideas Metsäkylä riding center offers a healthy, safe and ideal environment for users of all ages.
