The purpose of this thesis was to make a guidebook about pressure ulcer specially for nurses working in hospital wards or in municipal health centre wards implementing practical work with pressure ulcers and patients who are vulnerable to pressure ulcers.

The first part of this thesis contained an introduction to subject related theory. The most important facts were ulcer, treatment of pressure ulcer and prevention of pressure ulcers. The output of this thesis was a guidebook. The general purpose was to collect essential matters from theory. In the process of compiling this guidebook it was considered that it´s meant for professional use to nursing staff.

The subject of the thesis was chosen for its attractiveness and prevalence of pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers appear a lot although the means of preventing them are available in everyday nursing. Pressure ulcers are treated in almost every hospital ward and in municipal health centre ward. That is the reason prevention became the main point of the theory part. With the help of the guidebook the knowledge of treating and preventing pressure ulcers among the nursing staff hopefully increases. Taking care of patient hygiene, nutrition and regularly changing patient positions can decrease pressure ulcers.
