The thesis was commissioned by the Alvari family work project run by Kanta-Häme development association of family work who wished to hear their clients' experiences. The theoretic themes presented in this thesis are paternity and child protection family work. Alvari family work and mens' work organized by The Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters are also introduced.

The aim of this thesis was to find out how the fathers in the client families of Alvari family work experienced the family work services provided. The assignment was accomplished by stating two questions to be answered. The questions were how the fathers experienced the family work services provided and what kind of concrete effect the help offered by Alvari family work has had in the fathers' opinion.

The research methods used in this thesis were a questionnaire and a theme interview. The results of the questionnaire were utilized to lead to the topic and were used as backgroud information in the theme interview. The analysis of qualitative material was made by organizing it according to themes.

The fathers' experiences were mainly positive although the work done varied between the families. Help and support was given in different life situations. The most significant features were aid in financial problems, in relationship and in parenthood. Other important things received through Alvari family work were adapting to society, assimilating paternity, controlling everyday life, gaining certainty in raising children and finding other helping resources.
