This thesis is about designing and programming PLC and SCADA applications for the anode furnace. An anode furnace is one of the devices used in copper production. The commissioner of the thesis was Alte Oy, which is an engineering office in Hyvinkää. Alte operates in the fields of mechanical, electrical and automation engineering. The aim of this work is to design and program working PLC and SCADA applications for the project, which Kumera Ltd commissioned from Alte. Additional aim was to learn to manage entities in engineering.

The thesis introduces the production of copper, examines an automation system and the techniques used with an anode furnace as well as describes the characteristics of the applications created in the project. In particular, the thesis focuses on Siemens’ distributed I/O hardware ja the ProfiSafe fieldbus. In the final chapter the author presents some ideas and experiences on how learning to manage entities came true in this project for him.
