The objective of this Bachelor’s thesis was to investigate graduating nursing students’ knowledge of hygiene. The thesis investigated how students perceive their own hygiene skills and the importance they attach to hygiene skills. The study determined the nursing students’ experiences of hygiene education. It also examined what kind of information the nurse students have from asepsis and hygiene. The results can be used for the development the hygiene education.

This thesis was completed quantitatively. The information was gathered by a structured electronic questionnaire. The questionnaire contained a single open question. The findings have been illustrated with frequencies and with averages. The questionnaire was answered by 29 students out of 73. The response rate was 40 %.

Graduating nursing students experienced their own hygiene knowledge skills mainly good. A nurse’s hygiene skill was seen as very important. Graduating nursing students felt that the school has organized quite a bit of practical training from aseptic techniques and hygiene as well as theoretical education in hygiene. Students hoped that the amount of school hygiene education would be increased. According to the students practical placements offer better hygiene education than school. Based on the results of this survey graduating nursing students information on hygiene and aseptic technique can be assessed fairly good.

It is proposed that in the future someone could investigate nursing students’ knowledge of hygiene in the schools where hygiene education is now organized as a separate study. The results can be compared with this study's results.
