The aim of this study was to develop the task charts of 'The first hour protocol' for ICU. This was done according to the feedback given by the Tampere Uni-versity Hospital ICU personnel. The goal of this study was to clarify the activ-ities of the nursing team admitting a patient, to improve co-operation and con-tinuation of the patients care. The theoretical part of this practice based study was collected from the nurs-ing point of view. Quality of nursing, teamwork in the ICU and practice based study were discussed in the theoretical part. Guidelines are a constant part of improving and developing nursing but also a foundation of ICU nurses’ know-how and commitment. The guideline describes how the activity should pro-ceed. It solidifies in practice by using the task charts. In the task charts, the tasks and the operator are clearly appointed. This allows the ever changing situations and misunderstandings to decrease. With the first hour protocol guideline common rules are created with the task charts when admitting a pa-tient to the Tampere University Hospital ICU. Feedback from the task charts was collected in August 2012. Questionnaires were answered by ICU nurses, doctors and medical students taking part in the first hour simulation training. Open questions were divided and analysed by forming different themes. All in all 23 participants answered the questionnaire and the response rate was 100 %. The participants who answered the ques-tionnaire felt that the task charts were effective and useful. Based on the an-swers of the questionnaires, the participants felt that the assignment allocation would have to be rectified.
