In this bachelor's thesis automation was planned, constructed, programmed and implemented for a groundwater catchment system with the purpose of keeping the pressure in the pipeline constant. The water catchment system includes three pumps pumping the ground water by alternation into a pipe. The operation of the pumps was carried out in such a way that the pressure in the pipeline system remained constant.

The planning of the work included the wiring- and circuit diagrams, board layout, an I/O list, a cable list and of the automation a description operations of the automation board. At the planning stage it is very important to know the functional design of the automation board and to take into account usability and possible failure conditions. The author had internalised this knowledge through previous work experience in the field.

At the construction stage the parts for the automation board were ordered from the suppliers and the automation board was constructed according to a plan. At the construction stage it was important to take into account the wiring installations considering that the 24-volt and 230-volt voltages could met be directed into the same cable ducts.

At the programming stage of the work software was programmed into the Omron logic used in the automation board to keep the water catchment pumps working and to stabilize the pressure. An interface was programmed into the automation touch screen to manage the logic properties and to give information on the pressure in the pipeline system, the flow and the functions of the instruments. In addition the logic and a gsm-modem were programmed to communicate with each other to make the modem send a text message to the operator's mobile in case of a fault.

The main objective this project was to construct the system and to develop the author's programming experience and common knowledge of the automation system as a whole.
