This thesis was commissioned by Ekokem-Palvelu Oy. The aim of the thesis was to optimize the waste flow and increase the use of recycled material in earth construction. Another aim was to examine the utilization of certain types of waste materials specified in the Decree (591/2006) in Ekokem-Palvelu (so called MARA-act). The legislation and the treatment of these materials were also investigated.

The project was carried out by studying the possible uses of materials specified in the MARA-act and by finding out the sources of the materials, where they exist, in what form and the amount of the materials. Places of temporary storages in Ekokem-Palvelu were also studied.

The data for the thesis was obtained from literature and by interviewing the experts of industry. It can be used as a tool when planning where a new site should be located in. This thesis also includes information about reusable wastes and criteria for increasing and developing their reuse.

Based on the comparison presented in this thesis it can be concluded that most of the natural resources used in earth construction could be replaced by recycled material. The use of these materials is being facilitated by new regulations.
