The purpose of this functional thesis was to design a visual appearance for an ecological sports car. The project was assigned by Mr Klaus Raunela from KMRengineering Ltd. The basis for this Bachelor’s thesis came from the first prototype of an ecological sports car designed and built by him. The aim in this thesis was to design an intriguing exterior for the prototype of the next generation sports car that is influenced by the aerodynamic and structural aspects of the first prototype vehicle.

Background information for the basis of the design plan was gained by the methods of qualitative research, such as interviewing the client and observing the first prototype vehicle. Further information to help the design process was obtained also from literature, pictures and video material. Data from the research was then examined and applied to the design process.

The project was carried out on the concept design level and it handles the exterior design only. Interior design wasn’t considered that important to be visualized at this stage of the project and it was in fact impossible to accomplish within the time limit. The main result of the project is a 3D-model and 3D rendered presentation images for the client. This thesis project has taught how comprehensive the concept design stage really is in the context of product design. This report unveils the entire process of this thesis from the first steps of the assignment to executing the final concept idea.
