The aim of this thesis was to create an empowering album method to be used in work with people with intellectual disabilities. The thesis presents what empowering scrapbooking is, what it is based on and how it can be instructed to clients. The baseline in the thesis is that everyone is creative.

The thesis was implemented in a family home, where 5 clients took part in the empowering album workshop. Working with familiar clients was both a challenge and an opportunity for new kind of interaction.

The theoretical basis of the thesis contained narrative identity theory, empowering photography and therapeutic art expression. The thesis examined how these three theories interact with each other and what possibili-ties of self expression they offer. The research material included observa-tions, interviews and literary sources.

The main result of this thesis is that empowering albums are well adapted for the needs of disabled people. All the participants enjoyed their work and looked forward to the sessions. Empowering albums strengthened the author’s professional identity and increased interaction with the clients.
