The aim of this practice based Bachelor’s thesis was to produce a guidance documentation for upcoming fathers that can be used by public health nurses in parental guidance for men. The thesis was made in co-operation with the Tervakoski maternity clinic. Documentation was made available for all maternity clinics in the district of Janakkala. The purpose of this thesis was to strengthen upcoming fathers’ sense of fatherhood, improve the acknowledgement of the fathers in maternity clinics and to improve the relationship between a father and his child.

The theory part of the thesis addressed the changing role of the father and father’s significance for the child’s life in modern world. The theory part also studied men’s growth into fatherhood and the importance of early interaction between parent and child. The theory part also included studying of maternity clinics’ ways of addressing fathers and how parenthood and early interaction is being supported by maternity clinics. The thesis also included theory of writing good patient guidelines.

You are going to be a father! -guide invites fathers to the maternity clinic and provides concrete information about the father's role during pregnancy and delivery. The guide deals with the early interaction and father’s importance to the baby. Fathers are also given information about how the relationship changes after childbirth.

The topic for the thesis came from working life, there was a need for a guide especially for fathers. The maternity clinic which co-operated with the authors pointed out that they are worried about how electrical equipment effect the development of early interaction. You are going to be a father! -guide reminds fathers that a child can’t compete with a father’s attention with electrical equipment.

The development task is going to be the exhibition which is planned especially for parents. Exhibition will be seen at Tervakoski maternity clinic lounge. The exhibition shows how relationships change after childbirth and how relationship can be taken care of.
