The purpose of this thesis was to examine how a guided nature activity assists immigrants to develop their relationship with nature. An immigrant has created a relationship with nature in his home country. Because of immigration the environment and culture change and the relationship will require a reform. In Finland, nature has a significant role in people’s health and well-being. By means of a better relationship with nature an immigrant receives the same opportunities with local people to utilize nature as part of well-being.

This research was collaborated with Tampere’s Young Women’s Christian Association. This thesis was a qualitative survey and it was divided into two parts. The first part included a group interview. The aim of the interview was to examine the needs of the group and these results were used in the second part. The second part of this thesis included guided nature activity sessions. Through participant observation it was examined how the activity sessions contributed to the group. The results and observations were documented in a research diary.

The theoretical background deals with nature relationship, nature experiences and the positive effects that outdoor activities have on people’s well-being. In addition, immigration, challenges in integration and multiculturalism were discussed.

According to the group of immigrants who participated in the survey, the natural environment plays a small role in their well-being. The seasonal challenges decrease the outdoor activities considerably. By observing the needs of the group, safe and inspiring outdoor activities can be created. The study shows that the guided nature activity gives positive nature experiences. These experiences will be important in improving the relationship with nature. The group thought that the outings gave a positive sense of well-being.
