Luomuporsastuotannon mahdollisuudet Suomessa

To be able to expand organic pig production, more knowledge is needed about the risks of farming and about investment needs. The current state of organic piglet production in Finland was determined by means of a questionnaire survey. In 2003, there were only 13 organic piglet producers, and nine of them were interviewed in person. The organic piggeries were small, having an average of 30 sows. On average, sows farrowed 1.8 times and weaned 15.8 piglets per year. Some of the piggeries were old and in fairly poor shape, but some were new and specifically built for organic production. Fittings, equipment, and inside wall structures were most in need of repairs. The ventilation functioned quite well, and the moisture, temperature, and ammonia content of the air were within the recommended limits. Daily work input per piggery was ten hours, with the cleaning out of manure and feeding taking up 50 % of the time. The bedding material used was usually straw. Most of the farms raised their own piglets, and there were usually one or two feed mixtures for all pigs. The energy and mineral content of the diets was usually too low for lactating sows, and they often lost weight. There were also deficiencies in nutrient content in diets for piglets and slaughter pigs, which limited their growth. The health of sows and piglets was predominantly good, and disease prevention was well taken care of. The production costs in organic pig farming are about 10 % higher than in conventional pig farming. Production costs per kilogram of pig meat are about 37 % higher than in conventional farming. The costs per piglet are about 51 % higher in organic farming. The profitability of organic farming is better than that of conventional farming. Organic farming shows an entrepreneurial profit, whereas conventional production shows an entrepreneurial loss. The main reason for organic farming's better profitability consists of the high subsidies paid for large amounts of arable area.
