In Finland, about 18 million tons of manure is produced annually. Its value as fertilizer is about 53.3 million ECU of which about one third ends to pasture and 40% of the remainder is stored as slurry. The cost of storing manure over long periods, made necessary by the Finnish climate, is already almost as great as the value of the manure as fertilizer. The transportation of manure is a significant part of all the transportations on an animal production farm. As a mass, it is at least as significant as the transportation of feeds and animal products. The value of the manure, however, only covers the transportation cost of about 8 to 9 km. The use of poor application methods or times may result in a loss of 38 to 50% of the fertilizing value of the manure. The growth of production units, and different forms of collective use of equipment used to apply manure, increases possibilities to use application methods, which in turn allows for a better usage of nutrients and smaller emissions to the environment. However, the transportation of manure must be made over greater distances. This problem is made worse by the great proportion of forests, mires and lakes, especially in Eastern and Northern Finland. The animal producing farms could solve the problem by surrendering manure to the grain crop growing farms located amongst them, who could then be subsidized for receiving manure. The animal producing farms could also, at non-peak times, transport to, and store manure in the storage silos built on the fields that are located further from the farm center. Alternatively, they could have an operator perform the transportation.
