The purpose of this thesis was to find out the current state of patient safety and development needs in the Welfare district of Forssa in a nutshell. The Welfare District of Forssa (FSHKY) was interested in the present topic and wanted to find out the current state of patient safety here in their own organization. The aim of this thesis was to produce information which can be used in patient safety culture development in this organization and other social and healthy organizations.

In the theory part patient safety and patient safety culture are paid attention to. The target of the theory part is to clarify patient safety and the psychological and organizational dimensions of patient safety culture as well as social processes which were researched previously at Forssa Health Care District (FSTKY).

This thesis was carried out in spring 2015 as a ready-made Webropol Patient Safety culture survey which had been drawn up at Technical Re-search Centre of Finland (VTT). The basic group of this query was FSHKY’s whole staff. This query answered 197 employees, the answer per cent was 20 percent.

According to the results, FSHKY’s staff regarded the organization’s patient safety as good, generally speaking. The highest estimates were given to the sense of personal responsibility and safety motivation. Instead, the sense of control and change management got the lowest estimates. Working motivation, work complacency, expectation for work and autonomy of working were estimated high and correspondingly worry about safety and fear of blame were estimated low. Age, working years and a position of leadership seemed to affect many psychological dimensions and organizational functions of patient safety culture.
