This Bachelor’s thesis originated from an interest in responding to the needs of young clients of child protection services and in guiding them to self-actualization by means of creative and art-based methods. The thesis examined two young people living in a foster home and the process of inspiring them to the use of art-based methods and self-actualization. The theoretical basis of the thesis consisted of art-based methods, creativity, self-actualization, inspiring, sociocultural animation and substitute care.

The thesis was an action research including a practice-based working process. The art-based working projects took place individually with two young people. The objectives of art-based work were related to the support needs of the young people. The activity was planned in collaboration with the young person. The methods used in art-based working were body and movement, music and sound, and a narrative method which was implemented as a handicraft project. The research data were obtained through observing the art-based working and interviewing the young people who participated in the process.

Based on the data analysis, it can be deduced that when inspiring someone to art-based activity, the individual's personality and starting level of enthusiasm must be considered. The results highlighted that inspiring activities entail versatility, choice and limited tasks commensurate with the skill level. The fact that the instructor gives examples, participates, listens and follows up initiatives enhances the effects of inspiring.

The results also demonstrated that self-actualization involves exceeding one´s comfort zone, suitable challenge and concentration in the activity. Self-actualization always includes creativity and self-development which presuppose reflectivity, self-challenging and taking responsibility of one’s own agency. Through the inspiring activities, the young person can find interesting activities, meaningful experiences and important goals. It can be a beginning for self-improvement.
