The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis was to develop a media pedagogical comic workshop. As a part of a service design the comic workshop was developed and tested in the Hyvinkään-Riihimäen Seudun Ammattikoulu-tussäätiö (HRAKS) kickstart coaching group. During the service design process a customer evaluation was done for the kickstart coaching group by a half structured inquiry and a group observation. The comic workshop was also tested in practice. Afterwards, feedback was collected and the comic workshop was developed further.

As a part of the Bachelor’s thesis one media pedagogy professional was interviewed by phone and one comic teacher via email. The information that was gathered from interviews and literature was utilized in the comic workshop service design.

Media literacy, media pedagogy and comic expression are discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis. Media criticism and culture jamming aspects are also considered. The aim of the theoretical part is to examine what is included in good media literacy and what kind of media pedagogy the goal is achieved by. With the help of comics-related knowledge, comic expression and its characteristics are familiarized with in more detail.

In the research it was found out that media pedagogy is diverse, comics are part of media and therefore suitable for media pedagogy. In accord-ance with the aims, media pedagogical comic workshop was generated as a result of the Bachelor’s thesis. The comic workshop and the information which was gathered during the process can be utilized as a part of more comprehensive courses improving media literacy and media criticism. The comic workshop is also easily edited to meet the needs of different groups.
