The aim of this practice-based Bachelor’s thesis was to serve people of all age-groups with information on sleep itself and its importance. The thesis was created in co-operation with Terveyskioski of the city of Ylöjärvi. On the 12th of April, a sleep-education oriented theme day was hosted at the facilities of Terveyskioski. The purpose of this thesis was to raise people’s awareness on the significance of sleep and its different forms during various stages of life and also to motivate people to sleep sufficiently.

Both literal and online sources from national and international publications were used in the making of the thesis. The rhythm and the stages of sleep are discussed in the theory section of thesis. In addition, the different forms of sleep during different stages of life and its effect on people, as well as the treatment of sleep, are covered.

Eight posters were made out of all the gathered data which consist of the most fundamental points of the thesis. The posters addressed stages of sleep, circadian and homeostatic rhythm, difference of sleep in different age-groups, sleep-deprivation, sleep treatment, summer- and winter seasons, the strain of time zone change and also bulletins for example on the sleep cycles of different animal species for example. There were also handouts on sleep treatment. The theme day participants were also offered sleep diaries and tests to find out whether they were early risers or night owls.

The subject for the thesis was proposed by students and Terveyskioski had a demand for sleep—oriented theme day and materials. During the theme day it was found that sleep-education would be appreciated in all age groups and should be offered in different venues. Pictures of the sleep theme day and posters are attached to thesis.
