The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis was to find motivation methods for managers and supervisors in the field of culture and social and health care sector. At the same time its purpose was to encourage those in managerial or supervisory positions to use a wider and bolder variety of motivation methods. The thesis was not commissioned by any workplace or organization: instead the starting point was the author’s personal interest in the topic. She wanted to deepen her understanding gained during studies and previous work experience, both as an employee and a supervisor.

The thesis is qualitative and it focuses on motivation and motivation methods in the world of work. The background theory of the thesis is about psychology of motivation, inspiring, leadership and coaching. The author does not have much experience of being a manager or supervisor, but her individual and group leading skills gained during her studies in crafts and recreation have afforded her with strong view and knowledge of motivation. The data for the thesis was collected by interviewing four specialists with half-structured interviews. The data from the interviews were analysed and compared with data from printed and electronic sources.

Based on the results, investing in motivation methods improves success of the organization and community spirit. Motivation methods are: taking personal development and employee’s personality into account, investing in positive community spirit, equality, acknowledgement, feedback and independent work and at the same time communal sharing and problem-solving. Leadership and motivation are both very broad topics, hence a more in-depth study and a more comprehensive interview sample would give further information. On the other hand, further study could look at how motivation in the fields of culture and social and health care differs from other fields.
