LARP- pelaamista vai näyttelemistä? : Liveroolipelaamisen hyödyt harrastajateatterissa

The subject of this thesis was to compare role-playing and acting in theatre. The purpose was also bringing up benefits of role-playing in theatre. Role-playing is rather a new form of cultural activity, the potentials and benefits of which are being explored. The thesis process included an extensive activity-based course which was carried out with Todellisuuspakolaiset ry (Refugees of reality, association) at the youth theatre of Riihimäki in spring 2016. The course included ten assemblies and a four-hour final larp.

The aim of the thesis was to study why live action role-players say that they play their character even though it looks like acting. The study com-pared playing and acting, especially the preparation for the role and staying in it. The aim was also to study the benefits of live action role-playing in theatre.

The theoretical background of the thesis was based on literature of role-playing games and live action role-playing and studies on theatre performances and instruction of the actor. The practice-based part of the thesis was the role-playing course. Results were gained by observing the participants and using their learning diaries as material.

Even though acting and playing look similar in the eyes of an outsider, there are many differences. In a game, there is no audience, while in a theatrical play the audience is a very important part of the show. In theatre, the actor adopts a role of a character and in a role-play game the player adopts the identity of a character. In role-playing games, the players are more immersed in their characters, because they try to hold on to the identity throughout the game. In theatre, the actors are able to leave the role when they are not on stage.

A conclusion of the study is that LARP is playing but it has some elements of acting. The research could be extended in order to get a better sampling of professional actors and experienced role-players. This thesis can be used to clarify the action role-playing practices and its benefits in theatre.
