Hoitotyön opiskelijoiden kokemuksia ammatillisesta kasvusta kansainvälisen opiskelijavaihdon aikana

The purpose of this thesis was to describe nursing students’ experiences of their professional growth during international student exchange. The aim was to produce information about the impact of international student exchange on nursing students’ professional growth which could be used in developing international student exchange.

The research method was qualitative. The data were collected from the reports of student exchanges and two essays of twenty students who studying at HAMK University of Applied Sciences. The data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis.

The results showed that international student exchange had an impact on nursing students’ professional growth. Student exchange had a positive effect on developing language skills and cross-cultural skills. Professional development was experienced in clinical and nursing skills. The students’ own attitude, local people and the environment had promotion and preventive effects on their professional growth. During the exchange students faced challenges and problems but in general it was positive and rewarding experience.

According to the study, the following points of student exchange should be developed: information to students and language training before exchange, organizing practicalities and support and tutoring for the students. Students should have more organized free time and co-operation with local students.
