In Finland young people`s sexual health has become worse during last years. Abortions and venereal diseases have increased among young people. Education of sexual health differs between schools. The purpose of this Bachelor`s thesis was to promote sexual health for girls in the ninth grade.

A partner for the thesis was a school in Hämeenlinna. The girls in the school´s ninth grade were given sexual health lessons. The themes of the lessons were chosen on the school health survey and the partner school`s previous year’s health education themes. The theory part was done also by using the same themes. This thesis discusses girls’ youth and the most general and most important venereal diseases in the large area of sexual health, different contraception methods and abortion from the perspective of the adolescents.

The aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about sexual health themes and the common changes in the body in puberty. Also one of the aims was to emphasize the adolescents’ own responsibility of looking after their own body. The theory part and the implementation of the practice based part used varied literature and related material of Väestoliitto and Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. In addition different surveys and statistics databases were used.

This practice based thesis hopefully gives the partner school ideas for activation of sexual health teaching. The implementation of the lessons is hoped to give knowledge and a sense of responsibility for sexual health to the girls in the ninth grade. It also hopefully gives development suggestions and awakens interest to provide to adolescents knowledge and activities about the themes in sexual health.
