Näkemyksiä vammaisen lapsen harrastustoiminnan merkityksestä ja haasteista

The research problem of the thesis was to explore views on the significance of leisure activity for a disabled child and on the challenges it imposes. The aim was to survey the views of disabled children's parents and to bring out the children's voice. The meaning of the thesis was to draw attention to the inconsistency between the importance of hobbies and the shortage of supply.

The theoretical background of the study consists of the hearing of the child's voice, leisure activity and social pedagogy. From the social pedagogy, the concepts of social exclusion, communities and social networks are defined. The earlier research which deals with the subject and theory areas supports the results that were obtained from the study.

The thesis was carried out as a qualitative study. The material was collected using thematic interviews and photos taken during the special sports club activity. Interviews were analyzed by the method of content analysis. Photographs were used in order to bring out the children's voice.

The research results of the thesis were obtained according to the study questions about the significance of the leisure activity, the reasons why a child does not participate in leisure activities, the challenges which are related to the leisure activity and the children's opinions. The parents emphasized the significance of the leisure activity strongly, taking the different challenges also into consideration. It can be concluded that the parents and the children regard the leisure activity as very significant. The study results also show that attention should be paid to the challenges which are related to leisure activities. Thus, the disabled children's possibilities to participate could be increased.
