The purpose of this thesis was to use intuitive expression and to follow along expressive art therapy’s methods in order to tap into a flow state. The aim was to use flow as a means towards designing a continuous textile pattern for a collaboration project, whose client is a nursing home located in Hämeenlinna. This thesis consists of theoretical research into expressive art therapy, intuition, flow state and the preconditions in finding flow. The author’s already established experience in expressive art therapy comes from a HAMK course on the subject the author attended in 2018. The aim of this thesis was to further examine the author’s typical design process and make changes to the process to make it better and more meaningful. Carried out exercises of expressive art therapy were combined into a collaboration project’s design process and the author researched what the benefits of those exercises were in conjunction to a design process. The outcome of this thesis was a pattern design that was digitally printed via Mimaki textile printer as well as an improved model of the author’s design process.
