ABSTRACT

The topic of the thesis is to design an illuminating work of glass art and make a prototype of one part of the design. The work of glass art will be placed in an open shelter in Urkin Piilopirtti in Pinsiö. The shelter is outdoors. The background of the thesis comes from the themes of the existing works of art in Urkin Piilopirtti and its surroundings.

The thesis was functional. The work included data acquisition, making the research and making the prototype. The data acquisition methods were observation of different glass art techniques, researching the weather resistance of different techniques and practical testing of materials and techniques. The sources of the thesis were literature and articles on the theme of the thesis. The previous skill and knowledge of materials and techniques of the author of the thesis were also used as sources in the thesis.

The main aim of the thesis was to design an illuminating glass work that fits in the interior of the openair shelter. The work must be weather resistant and durable in other surrounding conditions. The work has a dimmer with which the lighting and atmosphere of the shelter can be changed according to needs. The right colour combination for the glass work was found by practical testing. A prototype of one part of the glass work was made as part of the thesis. The design of the glass work was tested with the help of two different scale models.
