The thesis subject was the search for open-source workforce management systems and evaluating their feasibility for the Finnish markets. Based on the search results, the TimeTrex system was selected for a closer analysis. The thesis gives a comprehensive overview on how the different functionalities of the selected system support the Finnish operating environment. Based on this information, the organization considering the system can get insight on if they have the capabilities to deploy TimeTrex and what kinds of functions does the system support.

The knowledge base of the thesis consists of a theory section, which describes the advantages and disadvantages of implementing open-source systems for an organization. Also, the history, functionalities, procurement, and specifications of a workforce management system are described. The thesis is functional. A specification was made based on the Finnish working time act, which was configured into the system. This was used as a basis for testing and general evaluation of the system functionalities and fit.

The TimeTrex system can be recommended with reservation for organizations which have the possibility to do their own installation. Furthermore, the organization wants to implement self-service functionalities, a means to collect worked time, and to do simple rule-based payroll calculations for basis of a payroll file. The organization’s shift scheduling is very straightforward or based on rotating rosters.
