The aim of this thesis was to investigate single fathers’ views on parenting. Single fathers and their children are a growing customer group at the child health clinics. In this thesis experiential knowledge about what it is to be a single father and what kind of support they have gotten from the child health clinics was gathered.

In the theory part parenting is introduced from the father’s and a single parent’s viewpoint. In addition, the child health clinic as a supporting system for parents is introduced. Rolemapping of parenting® is presented as one example of the support methods. In this thesis single fathers were interviewed and asked about their experiences and how they felt the child health clinic had been able to support them.

The thesis was carried out from the qualitative perspective. The data was collected by interwieving five single fathers in Kanta-Häme area in February 2013. All fathers had at least one child that was a client of the child health clinic. The research methods used were theme interview and inductive content analysis.

According to the results a single father’s daily life consists of very normal and eventful life of a family with children. Fathers were pleased with the support and services of child health clinics. On the other hand, child health clinics were not experienced to be the most important source for support in comparison with family and close friends. Invitations for the child's health checkups were something that the fathers’ mentioned would be useful.

These results present newl information about single fathers’ parenting experiences which can be applied especially by nurses of the child health clinics. Based on this information an article was published.
