The Bachelor’s thesis was a done in co-operation with a day care center in southern Finland. The aim of this thesis was to examine a day care center as an artistic environment of growth. The aim was to study what kind of storytellers and illustrators 5–6-year-old children are and what kind of support children will benefit from as storytellers and illustrators.

The theoretical background deals with storycrafting and visual arts. Growth and development of 5–6-year-old children was considered from the perspective of art education. The theoretical background also describes daycare as an artistic environment of growth.

The thesis applied a qualitative research method. The data were collected using participating observation and theme interview. The analysis method used was inductive content analysis.

The results prove that children are innovative storytellers. Children make either detailed illustrations or test tools and materials creatively. Appreciating children’s ideas and their own culture support their storytelling. Storytelling could be supported by discussing with children or by suggesting new tools for them. Children’s own culture should be valued more. Methods of children’s own culture should be used in daycare daily.
