The development plan for Erkyläntie has been implemented by the technical and environmental sector of Riihimäki. The purpose of said plan is to transfer the drive-through traffic from Erkyläntie and its surroundings towards the junction between Siltakatu and V.I. Oksasen katu. The reason to limit the drive-through traffic in Erkyläntie is because there is a lot of private properties and the wooden school building of Patastenmäki along Erkyläntie. The objective is to present a suggestion to solve the problem of high drive-through traffic in the area.

The work includes traffic calculations, drive-through research, performance reviews and on-site visits to gather background information to solve the problem. Synchro/SimTraffic and Paramics were used for the performance reviews. The solutions are demonstrated via CAD and Novapoint. In addition the average daily traffic amount information were gathered from speed display boards on Erkyläntie.

The average daily traffic amount on Erkyläntie is around 3000 cars per day and out of this amount around 93 percent were driving through.

The solution to minimize drive-through traffic on Erkyläntie includes creating a gate-like appearance for the junctions to divert as much traffic as possible to use V.I. Oksasen katu and Uhkolankatu instead. Slowing down the traffic on Erkyläntie makes the alternative route, V.I. Oksasen katu and Uhkolankatu, seem more attractive.

The junction between V.I. Oksasen katu, Hj. Elomaan katu, Uusi Karhintie and Uhkolankatu is going to be changed into a roundabout to improve the traffic throughput. This will increase the quality of service for the alternative route, making it even more attractive for the people who would otherwise use Erkyläntie as a drive-through.
